Westvaal Holiday Resort, one of Vaal’s hidden gems

READ this article in Afrikaans

My pastor and friend, Zelda Oosthuizen always says, “There are many beautiful places in the Vaal, you just have to look.” Indeed, our church, First Foundation Ministries (FFM) had the most marvellous Sukkot weekend at one of these beautiful tucked away places in the Vaal Triangle, Westvaal Holiday Resort.

Westvaal Holiday Resort is a family-owned tranquil haven situated on the banks of the Vaal River, in the centre of Parys, Sasolburg and Vanderbijlpark.

This paradise was a farm bought in 1963 by the current owner’s father. Johan van der Westhuizen was only twenty-four years old when he bought that farm. Today, the resort is under the most capable management of Johan’s son Klasie and his beautiful wife, Charéne.

The resort has fourteen cabins, one hundred campsites and seven employees. My son and I stayed at Gemsbok, overlooking the mighty Vaal River, it was absolutely amazing!

What you can do:

  • Bird watching
  • Fishing
  • Quad bike riding
  • Barge trip
  • Kids’ play area
  • Braai pit
  • Swimming
  • Picnic spots

The resort is quite safe, you can enjoy your stay at ease, with no worry at all! The kids can roam freely in the camping site and have a ball, perhaps except going to the swimming pool alone as it has a shallow-end and deep-end.

One early morning while walking from the hall, I unexpectedly saw two kudus just a stone-throw away. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a camera on me. It was a moment to be treasured that was only captured by the heart.

Then they were the three donkeys that always showed up when the shofar was blown. They were ever so obedient to the call to assemble.

Westvaal Holiday Resort is a guaranteed exquisite nature experience. Pastor Zelda, take me back to Westvaal Holiday Resort! What a gem!
