Engen Garage robbers sentenced

JOHANNESBURG: The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele has confirmed the sentencing of Mlungisi Hudle, 29 and Phakamani Ximba, 27 of Nancefield Hostel. They were both found guilty for business robbery and sentenced to twelve years imprisonment each in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on the 26th of October 2022. They were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Mbele stated, “Accused robbed Engen Garage at Westdene (Sophiatown area) on the 21st of December 2019 at 17:00. They entered the shop pretending to be customers; one of them took a 2litre coke in the fridge and went to the cashier. His accomplice pointed the cashier’s with a firearm and took an undisclosed amount of money from both tills and cellphone of one of the cashier before they fled the scene.”

He added, “They screamed for help and the community came to their rescue; chase ensued and they were joined by police who were busy with their routine crime prevention duties. Police apprehended both suspects; cell phone, money and firearm was recovered. Accused were denied bail until they were sentenced.”

Good conviction is a result of a quality investigation done by Sergeant Mbali Mbense of Johannesburg Central Trio Detectives. We hope this sentence will scare away would be offenders from committing the same crime.
