Johannesburg uncle gets life for statutory rape

The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele has issued a statement confirming an incident where a 49-year-old uncle appeared in court and was found guilty for statutory rape.

Mbele said, “He was convicted to life imprisonment in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on the 21st of October 2022. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. His name will be included in the Register of Sexual Offenders.”

According to Captain Mbele, the accused raped a 9 year old girl from 2015 until 2018 November when she was 12 years old at Slovo Park Crosby (Brixton area). He elaborated, “Victim visited her Aunty when her mother was working night shifts; uncle raped her during the day when her Aunty was at work and gave her two rand (R2;00). He instructed her not to tell anyone.”

“On the 22nd of March 2019 in the morning; victim became brave enough and alerted her mother. They went to Brixton Police Station where a case was opened and suspect apprehended on the same day,” said Mbele.

Good conviction is a result of a quality investigation done by Warrant Officer Rebecca Abrahams of Johannesburg Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit (FCS). We hope this sentence will scare away men who are abusing women and children.”
