Female student brutally murdered in Sokoto, Nigeria

Deborah Samuel, the late student

A female student in Nigeria, who was identified as Deborah Samuel, was beaten to death and set on fire by fellow students who accused her of posting “blasphemous” statements in a WhatsApp group.

The brutal murder of the female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State, by her colleagues has been connected to a voice note the deceased sent to her class’s WhatsApp group allegedly protesting against the incessant sending of unnecessary messages to the group after one of the mates posted a piece related to the Islamic faith.

“There is a WhatsApp group being used by the students, and her Muslim colleague student posted an Islamic piece. She criticised the posting,” said one of the witnesses, who declined to be named.

“She composed an audio that contains blasphemous comments on the prophet of Islam and posted in the group. That is what triggered everything.”

The school was immediately closed down after the murder.
