42-year-old Mthobisi Moonlight Khumalo, was yesterday, the 3rd of May 2022, sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for rape in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Khumalo was accused of raping a 27-year-old female at Carlton Centre on the 14th of December 2019 at 13:00.
According to the SAPS spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele, the victim went to the toilet and the accused followed her. “He threatened her with a knife and took her to secluded place inside Carlton Centre; he raped and offered her twenty rands (R20;00). He was apprehended on the 06th of January 2020 while at work.”
Captain Mbele commented, “Good conviction is a result of a diligent work done by the Investigating Officer Sergeant Qondile Mkhabela of Johannesburg Central FCS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit. We hope this sentence will scare away would be offenders from abusing women.”
