Free at Last

A poem by Constance van Niekerk

Free at last

Thank you for leaving me
The pain of rejection broke me
But, just for a while
Eventually I got strength
Some was lent to me
Some was forced on me
Some was offered to me
Time was kind to me
It took long
But, gradually
I’m becoming
Like a caterpillar
Out of the cocoon
Beauty and grace
I’m becoming
Like a phoenix
Out of the ashes
Renewed, restored
I’m becoming

Like a gumtree in all seasons
Majestically upright and content
Like the African elephant
Mighty and resilient
I’m becoming
Like the veld after the fire
And the storms of life
Rebirth begun
The journey of self-discovery
Commenced
I’m becoming

Memories of you and I
Have at last faded
Like the sun at twilight
Free at last,
from the shackles of thoughts of you
Just like the break of dawn
A new day beckons
I’m becoming me again

Thank you for leaving me
