Tweet with fake news incites violence against Zimbabweans in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA: A tweet circulating on Twitter claims that Zimbabweans are burning tyres on the road demanding census jobs, ‘Zimbabweans have blocked the road demanding the census jobs in SA Let’s make Zimbos lives hell until they leave’

Attached is a video of a woman speaking but not a single Zimbabwean in sight. There is not a shred of evidence to support the alleged farce of Zimbabweans. This is just an example of how xenophobic attacks on foreigners erupt, using unfounded accusations.

Black Child you on your own๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ (@SAisburning) Tweeted:
@Chosenfew850 We are tired of being bullied by our so called African Brothers in our own country ๐Ÿšฎ๐Ÿšฎ๐Ÿšฎ they must go back and fix their countries, imagine the nerve demanding jobs meant for only citizens. https://t.co/1NPB7gpRhJ https://twitter.com/SAisburning/status/1486626516016451594?s=20&t=3W8x6mq_d0XkM0R1OA97nQ

Only a fool would believe such a blatant lie. Why would Zimbabweans DEMAND jobs in a foreign country? Surely, they know better. A few people are standing up as the voices of reason but, is it enough?

SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE

Perhaps it’s time for South African intelligence and law enforcement agencies to put a clamp down on fake social media profiles spreading false information and inciting violence. Many people hide behind a keyboard pushing evil agendas. Is the arm of law too short to reach social media criminals?
