Malawian president dissolves entire cabinet

The President of Malawi, Mr Lazarus Chakwera has dissolved the entire cabinet, in a daring move to demonstrate his determination to confront lawlessness by public officials.

“I have dissolved my entire Cabinet effective immediately, and all the functions of Cabinet revert to my office until I announce a reconfigured Cabinet in two days,” said Chakwera.

In 2021, Chakwera fired Ken Kandodo (Minister of Labour) and Newton Kambala (Minister of Energy) following accusations of abuse of office.

There have been allegations of corruption against several members of the cabinet over the past few months. The current Minister of Lands, Kezzie Msukwa has been relieved of his duties following allegations that he received millions in bribes. Chakwera says that he wants Msukwa to be allowed to answer to the corruption charges he is facing in court and clear his name there.
