Veteran actor Patrick Shai has passed away

Patrick Shai

JOHANNESBURG – South Africans are mourning the death of veteran actor Patrick Shai, who allegedly committed suicide in his garage at his home in Dobsonville, Soweto.

Shai’s family confirmed the news of his passing in a short statement on earlier today, “It is with great sadness to announce the passing of the veteran actor Patrick Shai. He passed away this morning.”

In 2019, the actor was caught in the crossfire between police and residents in Dobsonville and he was shot eleven times with rubber bullets while attempting to intervene during a stand-off between residents and the police.

Patrick was best known for the roles in the TV soapies Soul CityGenerations The Legacy, Zone 14, Ashes to Ashes, 7de Laan and Zero Tolerance. Many would remember him in the 1995 blockbuster, Cry, The Beloved Country as Robert Ndela.

He was one of the founding members of Free Film Makers of South Africa and he was Community Safety Ambassador.

Shai started a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to help abusive men called Khuluma Ndoda after he admitted to physically and emotionally abusing his wife. He was also the anti-Femicide Champion for the Department of Justice.

Shai is survived by his wife and two children. May his soul rest in peace.
