Ode to a Perfect Stranger

He scurried behind me
In a panic,
My heart beating fast
And arms sweating
from the brutal midday's rays
I increased my pace.
He broke into a jog
Relentlessly,
And shamelessly he kept coming.
A long time ago it was,
Two thousand and three to be precise
Yet, the memory remains fresh to date
He crossed the broad road
And quickly, he caught up with me
The urgency of his news
Was clear as day
But, what could it be
That the man couldn't wait to say?

What came out of his mouth
I never would have guessed
'My dear,' he said, as he caught his breath,
'I saw you from afar
And just had to let you know:
I have a weakness
For dark African queens
A Nubian goddess
Steals my heart anytime, anywhere
That is the reason I married one!
I don't care what anyone says
This sun-baked original African skin
Just turns me on!',

After uttering his statement
He turned and resumed his journey
He might have walked away
But his words stayed behind with me
Those words were so unexpected,
Precious and unsolicited
Even time failed to expunge
The indelible memory
Of a complement sweeter than honey
Ernest words, they were
Declared by a perfect stranger
Once upon a time,
On the wide main road
Of the dusty little town of Chegutu
