The Shack that has ears in Mahikeng, South Africa

Lockdown has been a nightmare for many causing a variety of problems that include job losses, depression and stress. Many in the art industry have not been able to be creative and make a living. However, there’s one film birthed during lockdown in the North West Province of South Africa that has been winning awards, a perfect example of, every dark cloud has a silver lining.

The seven minute short film is called, ‘The Shack’. It was filmed, directed and written by Tebogo Timothy Chologi, known affectionately as Mrembola. Tebogo was born and raised in Magogwe Tlhabologo in Mahikeng, South Africa.

‘The Shack’ is a story of a man, Buti who lives in a shack. He lives alone, he doesn’t have a girlfriend or any children. The world has just been hit by Covid-19 and Buti has no radio and no television set. The story is narrated by his shack in Tswana with subtitles. For me, the indegenous language use is the reason I fell in love with The Shack, it’s simply original!
