Zimbabwean musician pens song against child marriages

Taren-Da, born Talent Ngwenya is a fast rising Afro-Pop/Contemporary musician from the Sunshine City, Harare in Zimbawe. Born on the 20th of September 1987, he is the first born in a family of four and a father of three handsome boys.

Taren-Da is a rehabilitation officer at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, his proffesional musical journey began in 2015 with the release of his debut album, ‘Dzinodhonza’.

Taren-Da has 3 albums to his name: Dzinodhonza (2015), Chinakisa Matondo (2017) and Cheukira (2020).

This new single was inspired by the recent events that happened in Zimbabwe. Taren-Da explains:

I’m a parent too and I know that it is my responsibility to protect my children & not destroy them and when we say a child is everyone’s child I felt for all the children that have been victims of this unethical practice there is nothing much we can do for the already victims but there is much we can do to save others from being victims so as a musician I chose this topic sentimental driven from the case of this 14-year-old Memory Machaya, who died whilst giving birth at a shrine at the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church. This unacceptable and we can’t lose children’s lives through something that we can put a stop to, so as a musician I would want to use my voice to advocate for a stop of child brides I know single voice might not go far but, if many voices come together in unity, then the message will definitely be heard everywhere.

Talent Ngwenya, Zimbabwean musician

Talent said, growing up, he enjoyed singing songs that no one had ever heard before.

“I realized that these songs were my creations, my mom would ask me amongst my siblings to lead a worship song whenever we made family prayers this made me realize that music was my gift.”

Talent’s musical journey started as a hobby at church. He thoroughly enjoyed praising God through singing and was part of the praise & worship team. From there, he started participating in Talent show auditions.

He narrates, “That’s where I met a friend who had a recording studio and he offered to record me so I started recording from there that was around 2005 but it took me time to discover my real sound so I tried different genres until I settled for the one I’m currently doing and during the search of my sound identity, I have worked with a number of great producers.”

Although Memory Machaya’s story has been received international attention, the president of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa is yet to comment on the practice by the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church of marrying off girls as young as 9 years old.

Talent says, “I believe Christians must be Christ-like and personally, I can’t fathom Christ advocating for men to marry a child. I believe this is never the kind of love which Jesus Christ had for children, be it in the name of religion or in the name of culture she is a child, a minor and not ready for marriage therefore she must be treated & respected as a child period. Expose girls to education not to marriage that’s what I call love.”

Lawyer and sculptor, David Ngwerume has also joined the fight against child ‘brides’.

He adds, “As community it’s our duty to have a special eye in the plight of protecting children against every form of abuse and save them from child marriages. Let’s not pretend as if nothing is going on when we see and hear of children dying giving birth it’s high time we voice up and save children from these predators.”

Talent concluded saying, “If we join voices against this practice of child brides believe me our shout will go far it is my prayer that policy makers join the shout too and bring down this inhumane practice.”

The track, ‘Kuroodza Vana’ will be released on Sunday the 22nd of August.
