More time-a poem by Connie Van Niekerk

This poem is dedicated to those who have gone before us. Till we meet again, in our hearts you will remain. Rest in Peace.

Ours was an incipient affair
Aborted suddenly in its embryonic stage
The culpable miscreant
Was silent and callous
Leaving no trace
only memories to embrace

We took each other for granted
always thinking
we have more time

Many words left unsaid
Many places yet to be discovered
Many questions still unanswered
Many actions remain unreciprocated
Many plans will stay unexecuted
Many moments uncaptured

We always assumed
we still had plenty of time
Now our road
Has abruptly ended
I can’t believe you’re gone
Left all alone to carry on
Till my time on earth is done
The pain may subside
Memories gradually dim
Like the shadows in the dark
The flood of tears may run dry
But the regret mushrooms
In the secret tunnels of a broken heart

If only
If only we had more time
