My heart is heavy

An ode to the fatherless children

imagejournal.org

My heart is heavy
Possibly also green with envy
For those with someone to call ‘daddy’
Men are innumerous but, only a handful are worthy
Even with faces quite hairy
Still, there are not very many
Though a lot might marry
Even be merry
When a baby is in the belly
I bet he will run away
At the first opportunity
To be free from any responsibility

My heart is heavy
I say I say I say
It sheds tears
For the multitude without any one to call ‘daddy’

Up they grow
Without any guidance or pillars
Young boys become men
To fill shoes left by their fathers
Blindly, ignorant of their roots
They wander through the maze of life
Grasping feeble hands
Attempting to play double duty
Being a mother and father rolled in one is a heavy burden
They do the best they can
But a father’s love can not be replaced
To the big-eyed girl craving for attention
But mommy can never be, a daughter’s first love
And a son’s hero
Try she does,
Because they’re not any options on the table
My heart is heavy I say
It weeps
For the fatherless generation

  1. I like your poem, but you’re wrong, you know.
