I’ve always wanted to visit the African Flavour Book Store in Vanderbijlpark and my wish came true yesterday when I attended Lesego Mailula’s book launch.

The book store felt homely and cozy, I believe that’s the effect of the multitude of books on the shelves. It felt like I had entered a whole new world that I didn’t want to leave.

Zakes the Adventurer: The Journey Begins is Lesego Mailula’s first book. It is a children’s book that centres around a young boy named Zakes.

The book launch was amazing, the opening speech was by the co-founder of African Flavour Books, Fortescue Helepi. He thanked Lesego for writing a book for the children, “The best investment a person can make is to invest in yourself and in children,” says Mr Helepi. He remarked that even if he fails to leave anything for his children, he will leave a library for them because from books, you can learn almost anything.

He encouraged Lesego to keep writing before requesting him to retell his journey as an author.

“This book is the beginning of a series,” said Lesego. He continued saying that he wants to keep writing the Zakes stories till he dies. “I wrote the manuscript in about 30 minutes but the entire process of editing, illustrations and finally publishing took about four years.

Lesego explained that he decided to write books for children because he’s fond of kids, “I’m a former Sunday School teacher and I believe that kids are my calling.”

“It’s been quite a journey. Publishing a book is not easy, especially if you about the industry. It’s necessary to do a lot of research and just gather as much information as possible. I actually want to advise aspiring writers out there to research, protect your work and never give up. A writer’s life is a lonely road but, don’t stop. It’s all worth it in the end.”

The book is available at African Flavour Books and soon online.
