It was a privilege to meet young published author and international model, Khanyisile Galela. “She is International Junior Miss Pre-teen,” says her proud mother.

Khanyisile is a twelve-year-old published author of the children’s book, ‘As We Grow’ and a professional model. She resides in Sharpeville and attends Assumpta Catholic Primary School.

“My grandmother enjoys telling stories and she inspired me to write a collection of stories,” says Khanyisile. She added that she noticed that the children in her area did not own books so she decided that she would write children’s books so that kids can have something to read. Khanyisile also said that after noticing that there are no published authors in her family, she decided to become the first one. She has inspired her thirteen and fourteen year old cousins to start writing their own books.

I wrote twenty-one stories and my mother encouraged me to publish them. She found someone to publish the book before I finished the twenty-one stories. I had to write faster, writing upto three stories in a day. The book, ‘As We Grow’ was published in September 2020. I gave it that title because it’s about how young children grow up. Some of the stories are my own personal experiences.

“My grandmother was so happy when I got published. Long before we received any copies, she would tell her friends, family and neighbours that her grandchild is publishing a book. When we received the first copies, she was over the moon with joy!”

Khanyi says that the book will soon be available on the shelves in African Flavour Book Store.

“I’m going to write another book soon. This time, a teenagers’ book. Besides school and writing books, I’m also a model. I started modelling at the age of six-years-old! I won the title Second Princess!” The young lady’s face completely lit up as soon as she began talking about modelling. Her eyes sparkled like stars on a dark velvety night. Just like a terrestrial luminescence, she shined right there and I basked in her radiance.

“I’ve always seen myself on the modelling ramp from as long as I can remember.” She said. “In 2019 I was nominated to go and represent South Africa in New York, United States of America for the International Junior Miss SA. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, we haven’t made the trip yet. It was postponed to 18-30 November 2021.” Times are indeed tough but I’d like to take this .

Khanyisile has already started doing charity initiatives and projects focusing mainly on underprivileged children in her community, the sky is not the limit to this rising star in Sharpeville.
