On Friday the 23rd of April, the entire world celebrated World Book Day or the International Day of the Book. Future Scholars Preschool in Vereeniging joined in the celebrations by having 3 local authors visit the school and speak to the Grades RR and R.
One of the authors is Sbusiso Manqa, an award-winning author and founder of Inyani Books. Sbusiso spoke to the learners on the importance of reading. He told the learners that if you want to learn anything new, you have to read a book. When you feel lost and need to find your way, you read a book.
Also in attendance was Lesego Mailula, author of the children’s book, Zakes the Adventurer: the journey begins. The book will be launched on the 1st of May. He also owns a company that design books, create animation series and do film production. Lesego read a few pages from his book which the learners enjoyed immensely.
And last but not least, Sefako Pooe; president and founder of the African Origins Movement that has over 60 000 followers globally. It focuses on preserving African heritage & culture as well as decolonizing the African mind. He is the author of the upcoming children’s book, Kabelo and the Nomo. Sefako told the learners about his book and encouraged learners to follow their dreams.
The Principal of the Preschool, Mrs Andu spoke to the learners on the importance of befriending books. She thanked the authors for coming to the school to celebrate World Book Day with the learners. “At Future Scholars Preschool, we give the learners a firm foundation and build each individual learner holistically.” She encourages parents to buy children books and limit television time, leading by example, she bought 2 copies of Lesego’s books for the school library.
