MCM – Tapiwa Gomo

Tapiwa Gomo

My name is Tapiwa Gomo, I am a father of one – a son – and I am in my mid-40s. I am media, development and humanitarian professional currently working for an international organization. I love what I do because it gives hope to those in need of life-saving and inspiration to dream.
Experiences in my job – meeting poor people, mainly children in difficult circumstances – reminds me of my early childhood. Even though my parents were both alive, I did not get to be raised by them. I was raised by grandparents, uncles and aunties. That means life was very tough, mainly in the village where I did my primary and high school, even though my small head then bore bigger dreams about life.
It was not easy to carry a dream no one around me could can imagine, and where most of my peers’ horizons of imagination were very limited and shallow. But dreams are like fire, they need more wood to keep them alive. And every time my late mother visited, she always told me to hold on to my dreams, survive each today, keep working hard in school, keep my eyes on the bigger picture as the future was pregnant with rewards. That burning desire is the energy that kept me going, aspiring and soaring the ladder of life.

I am happy to have fulfilled my mother’s wishes- she has always addressed me as Doctor. I am a holder of a PhD in Media studies from Wits in South Africa. I am a freshman in the property industry in South Africa – my adopted home since January 2008.

I love writing and I have been a weekly columnist for the past ten years. I have travelled the world and seen places. In all this, I do not forget how I grew up and understand the challenged facing young children. I have a passion for young people. Where I can, I help young people with career advice and sometimes financial support when I can afford. Transforming young people’s lives is not always expensive. I remember that $10 I received from an uncle at a very delicate and desperate moment of school life and that transformed my life and breathe life to waning dreams of a young person. I love spending time with my son, reading, running and gardening.
