Dede pens an ode to women

Constance van Niekerk, SA

Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe 2019 has been an inspiration to many, especially the African black woman. A South African poet, Dede, has penned an ode to women inspired by Miss Tunzi. Zozibini is the total package, beauty, brains and heart. Her answer to the final question in the Miss Universe Pageant is phenomenal!

“Take up space,” says Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe 2019

Zozibini Tunzi – Take up space
10 December 2019

Era of women’s take-over is now!!!
History has once again been written And the hands of women triumph once again
As they impact the world to bring about change
Take up space girl child
Your place is set up…

Let the dream in your head
Take shape through your actions
The future you are in says all things are possible
History… is re-written!
And this time, by the hands of young girls

The beauty of your brain
Radiates to the eyes of many
Broadcasting the hope of today’s possibilities
Believe… you are gifted with capabilities
And a path paved by great women before you
And those in today’s times… Zozibini polished it.
She is re-writing societal norms…
And correcting errors that span decades before her time
By taking up her space on this earth.

Your dazzling beauty…
Should be that which lights up your soul.
In Zozibini’s moment of glory, the daughter of AmaXhosa land, the African soil, the Motherland,
Disseminates beauty with her words…poise and humility…

With one simple act and leap of faith
She defied the odds, rose above limitations…
To stand tall on a world stage And take her deserved space…
Thus she claimed her crown in history…
And became a star on the radar

Ntombazana ufumana isipho sakho semvumo (Girl child, receive the gift of will-power…)
Ngezandla zombini (With both hands)
Amabhinqa alwayo ezizukulwaneni ezizayo (Woman warrior for generations to come)
Phakama qhawe ixhesha lakho ngoku ( Rise up girl child, your time is now)
Isihlalo sakho si bekiwe/silungisiwe (Your seat has been prepared…)
Yima umde kwaye uthathe indawo yakho (Stand tall and take your space…)
Kwaye ukwenze ngenjongo ngobubele nangesthozela (And do it gracefully with purpose).

The actions of one woman validated the dreams of many future generations
More importantly so… validated the place of black girls…
In a society that deemed us inferior
Take up space black child and ACT!!
Act with courage Act with determination Act with faith

Let us all cement the foundation laid
And make the world great again.
