An Open letter from Michael Lannas: Anger

Is anger justified?

Michael Lannas

In a world that is characterised by injustice, racialism, violence, inequality, bigotry, pandemic government corruption, war, greed and grinding poverty; is anger justified? When the same capitalists, bigots and racialists keep telling you that your reaction is over the top and exaggerated; is anger justified? As the gulf between the Haves and the Have Nots grows wider by the day and “Have” is basically defined by the colour of you skin ,is anger justified?  James Brown The Godfather of Soul released his quintessential hit “I’m Black and I’m proud” during the USA race riots of 1968. At the time people in the white community took it entirely the wrong way as “A kind of aggressive statement meant to induce fear”. Some sixty years later the statement seems almost comical and pathetic when we are now faced with escalating police brutality. It is blatantly obvious that nothing much has changed. With the best efforts of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Stockley Carmichael, Louie Newton and The Black Panthers practically made redundant and obsolete one can only lament with Bruce Hornsby that “Some things will never change”. So do we end up newted and castrated by the ubiquitous Facebook sentiments that reflect a bourgeoisie blank Utopia or do we finally admit for the benefit of our own sanity that “I am justifiably angry” ?

This anger won’t go
It bits down hard, true and slow
Swims in my gene pool
It cuts to the bone
Drives down deeper
Preys on my mind and my soul
It hunts and it kills
Presumes my innocence
And then it fills a dark deep void inside me
It laughs at me; mocks me
It owns me and will never let me be
Haunts and taunts me
I hear cursed anger sing
Oh woes unnumbered, my heart aches
Fate tried to conceal it
Death is nothing at all compared to it
It does not count the confessions of a justified sinner
And what of hell? Hell is oneself
Obscures my vision
Makes me believe this moment will be my last
Anger like one of the sinews of my soul
It takes me by the throat
I dance around in a ring and suppose
But anger sits in the middle and knows
